Managing Director Job Search

Reagle Music Theatre of Greater Boston (RMT) seeks a Managing Director (MD) to serve as its chief administrative and business officer, working in partnership with Artistic Director (AD) Rachel Bertone. The MD will be responsible for finance, operations, marketing, development, human resources, legal, and information technology. The MD also ensures that the organization’s activities align with its resources.

RMT just completed its 55th summer season of epic, bold, showstopping musical theatre. We also present revues, educational workshops and events, and other year-round programs. But like many regional theatres, we are still dealing with the effects of the pandemic. This is a unique opportunity for the right individual. Collaborating with the AD and the Board of Directors, our new MD will help to grow the business and advance the company’s mission to present accessible, inclusive musical theatre experiences that inspire creativity, learning, community, and a lifelong love of theatre.

Job Description

The Managing Director will be a dynamic and collaborative leader with demonstrated management and communication skills, deep business expertise, and a passion for the performing arts and the impact of the arts in the community. The MD will combine big-picture strategic thinking with people skills and attention to detail. Specifically, the roles and responsibilities of the MD include the following:

Strategy and Management

  • Assumes a leadership role in strategic planning along with the Artistic Director and Board;
  • Oversees execution of the strategic plan, monitoring results and refining as needed;
  • Manages the office staff and the day-to-day administration of the company;
  • Coordinating with the Board and AD, acts as RMT’s chief liaison to the Waltham Public Schools;
  • Ensures implementation of RMT's equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies.

Finance

  • Oversees all financial matters of the company – accounting, bookkeeping, reporting and forecasting, payroll, operating budgets, capital budget, audit and tax, risk management, etc.;
  • Oversees and ensures optimization of financial policies, processes, systems, and controls;
  • Reviews and approves production cost budgets provided by the AD, and assists in their development or modification as needed;
  • Ensures that Board and staff receive useful, timely, and accurate financial reports as appropriate.

Marketing

  • In consultation with the AD, responsible for marketing and brand strategies to build earned income, audiences, community engagement and support, image, and awareness;
  • Oversees marketing, group sales, advertising and publicity, box office staff and processes, customer/patron relations and communications, online presence (website, email, social media, streaming, etc.), public relations, and merchandise sales and concessions.

Fundraising and Development

  • Responsible for short- and long-term fundraising strategies and activities to build contributed income from individuals, foundations, corporate sponsors and partners, governments, and special events;
  • Works with the Board and AD to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors and institutional funders, including grant opportunities.

Programming and Production

  • Assists the AD in programming strategy, program development, and production planning;
  • In partnership with the AD, oversees the rehearsal and performance schedules of mainstage productions, educational workshops, trips, special events, and other programs;
  • Monitors production cost budgets & actuals and advises the AD and Board as appropriate;
  • Ensures the smooth and effective delivery of all programs.

Legal/Contract/Compliance Management

  • Oversees all contracting with external agents, including: Actors’ Equity Association, SDC, leases, rights/royalty agreements, vendors, insurance agreements, etc.;
  • Ensures that RMT’s policies and operations comply with all federal and state rules and regulations regarding employment, health and safety, public reporting, etc.

Human Resources

  • In partnership with the AD, fosters an organization culture that attracts and motivates top-quality people, including regional and professional performers, administrative, artistic, and educational staff, and volunteers;
  • Recruits, hires, develops, reviews, and terminates administrative staff;
  • Consulting closely with the AD, manages the human resource needs of artistic and educational employees (payroll, benefits, compliance, etc.);
  • In partnership with the Board and AD, advances the company’s commitment to access and EDI.

Technology Management

  • Ensures that the organization has the information and communications technologies (hardware, software, services) needed to be efficient and effective;
  • Oversees the Box Office/patron database and our online presence, and ensures that best practices are used in capturing, recording, storing, analyzing, and using data.

Salary and Application Procedure

This position is available now! Applicants should have at least five years of nonprofit management experience, with performing arts experience preferred. Salary will be paid commensurate with qualifications and experience, with a starting minimum of $75,000.
